The Turgen branch of the Ile Alatau State National Nature Park was founded in 1996, based on the forests of the former Alma-Ata Nature Reserve. The total area of the branch amounts to 74 594 hectares, and it is divided into three forestry stations:
- the Yssyk forestry, total area makes 10 318 hectares, located in the Yssyk gorge.
- the Malovodenskoye forestry, total area makes 18 540 hectares, is covering some 10 gorges.
- the Turgen forestry, total area amounts to 45 736 hectares, located in the Turgen gorge.
